MSM Peer Counselor

Reports to the MSM Project Coordinator.

$13/hr 12-19 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Distribute condoms at high risk venues where Asian & Pacific Islander (A&PI) men - especially men who have sex with men - congregate throughout New York City.
  • Recruit and enroll A&PI men into project services.
  • Promote project work as well as agency services at various venues.
  • Provide on site interpretation at the agency or other services site as appropriate.
  • Provide individual risk reduction counseling and co-facilitate group risk reduction counseling sessions.
  • Assist MSM project coordinator for HIV testing events and other health fair coordination.
  • Work collaboratively with other APICHA staff.
  • Attend all required meetings including training and supervision meetings.
    Collect all required data and assist in data entry as needed.
  • Submit all required documents such as timesheets, data collection forms and reports in a timely manner.
  • Other activities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to reduce HIV infection among Asian & Pacific Islander (A&PI) community.
  • Energetic and motivated to achieve the agency mission with team.
  • Ability to reach and recruit program participants especially gay identified or non gay identified individuals from A&PI community.
  • Availability on evenings and weekends is required.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations (i.e. MSM, gay, bisexual, transgender, various A&PI ethnicities and religions).
  • Fluency in at least one A&PI language is preferred.
  • High energy with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability with using public transportation.
  • Ability to communicate in English required.
  • Ability to use common office computer software such as Word and the Internet.
  • Good team player.
