The Acacia Fund for APICHA was established in 1996 as a response to the stark isolation faced by Filipino immigrants living with HIV/AIDS. It was also aimed to break the silence over the crisis and serve as a bridge to grassroots organization in the Filipino immigrant community. The case of a Filipino immigrant, who dies of AIDS related complications on his birthday in Apil 1995, prompted Gilda Sambajon and her friends to form the Tulay Project and to push for the creation of the Acacia Fund. These patient's parting words were “When I die, bury me under the shade of an Acacia tree.”

Acacia Fund today extends support to other Asian and Pacific Islanders living with HIV/AIDS.

As a safety net, it helps pay for a range of client support, from special nutritional needs to production of informational materials. Like the tree it’s named after, Acacia Fund provides shade and support.

Funded in 1989, APICHA supports, empowers, and advocates for the health and welfare of Asian and Pacific Islanders especially those living with, and at risk for HIV/AIDS. We are committed to creation culturally sensitive, multilingual programs that specifically meet the needs of this vastly diverse and largely marginalized community.
